Economic Life in Britain: Past, Present, and Future

Welcome to our website. The website is intended for all those interested in finding out more about the economic life of Britain. The term ‘economic life’ is used here to refer to that part of human living in which people are involved with and participate in economic activities, activities associated with producing, distributing and consuming goods and services. Some of these activities are represented in the images below - building houses, car production, farming, going on holiday, managing healthcare, renting or buying property, running a pub, shopping, tourism.

 

To help us find out about the condition of economic life in Britain we have identified 5 broad areas for investigation:

 

Economic growth and productivity

Employment and the welfare state

Poverty and inequality

Public spending and investment

UK countries and regions

 

As the title of the website implies, our investigations will encompass elements of past, present and future. By investigating these areas we can not only find out more about economic life in Britain today, but we can also better understand the changes that have taken place in economic life over several decades. Essentially it is about looking at the state we are in currently, understanding what the past can tell us about how we got to this position, and presenting some of the ideas and policies being suggested to improve things for the future.  

 

We expect that investigations into each area will give rise to a number of articles. Each article will be 800-850 words in length with the addition of references and notes.
